Particularly in Kenwood radios there is no comparison between the
performance of the Kenwood filters and the IRCs.
You're completely wasting your money if you put the Kenwood
filters in - their leakage, loss, etc. is awful!
When G3SXW and G3TXF went to the Solomons they took new 940s
with Kenwood filters. They could never understand why they
could operate the pile-up better with the filter switched OUT,
until I talked with Roger one day about the Kenwood filters.
Sure, enough when I explained what was going on he completely
agreed that the symptoms matched my description......
I helped fit several TS-930s and TS-940s with the IRCs and
they really transformed the rig into something pretty hot
for contesting and DXing.........
However, the IRC filters are so sharp you MUST let the 930 and 940
warm up for half an hour before aligning the carrier oscillators
otherwise things will not be optimised.

Has anyone managed to configure a Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum 16 (PAS-16)
sound card in a similar fashion, where speaker beeps are routed to the
sound card rather than to the PC's speaker? I have one of the older
PAS-16s, and if the documentation is to be believed, the "PC SPKR" connector
is only supposed to be connected to a speaker, not to a "SPKR OUT" line
from the motherboard.
I could try connecting the SPKR OUT on the motherboard to the "AUX
input" line on the sound card, but since the AUX is a line-level (?),
stereo input line and the speaker OUT line is a higher level (?), mono
line, perhaps it is not safe?
The PAS-16 docs imply that it should work that way automatically, with
no extra connections, unless you have an EISA machine. Well, I tried
various settings without success, including turning "Real Sound" off.

Another advantage to the IRCI CW filters is that they (appear to) come in
matched pairs. Mine (400 Hz) are very usable to less than 80 Hz ( - 3 dB)
in VBT mode in the 940. Stock Kenwoods don't even come close unless you
were very lucky with what came off the shelf. Otherwise forget VBT working
well. If only we knew the source!

Ok now I have both the CW and the Phone version.
My problem now is how to answer the calls. I hear the calls on SSB one
and type them in and nothing happens. Same thing in CW. I run the demos
and they work fine. I am sure I need to understand the vocie files better
also. Please email me direct as I do not wish to tie up anymore space on
the refractor. Love the way the programs work and can't wait to use them.
Been a long time since last contest. I need a FIX BAD!!!

I received several requests from guys on this reflector for Ped and
Rufz on disk. I can see why.
Downloading these programs took me a whole evening, counting the time
I spent getting the PK204g unzipping program, and figuring out how to use
it from the 100 page manual which I printed out. (unzipping is quite
easy, though)
I found Ped and Rufz on the K2MM ftp site:

uuencoded. I reached the K2MM site by simply going through the KA9FOX WWW

I know little about computers, and especially about moving files
around. I wouldn't feel comfortable making copies of these programs from
my computer. I'd sure hate to crash someones laptop borrowed from work.
Perhaps some puter expert on here would run off a few copies of Ped, VPED
and Rufz for those of us who didn't go to MIT.
Let me put this another way. I own 3 computer books: DOS for Dummies,
Internet for Dummies, and Mosaic for Dummies.
Anyone volunteer to provide these programs on disk, along with a bit
of installation information?

I'm thinking about getting a more "contest-friendly" call-sign under the
vanity call-sign program.
Any thinking on what is the most effective call-sign(s) for contesting?
I believe N4AR used to say, " that for the most effective use on CW,
each character should begin or end with a different dot or dash than the
one before or after." i.e. ( .- .-. ). Remember, he changed to
N4AR from K4GSU! Of course, for SSB, brevity and clarity should be
important.
Also, what does everyone think about getting a vanity call outside of
one's own call-area? Is it proper for a W0 to get a K5 call just because
its shorter on CW? Or does it matter since call letters are just becoming
serial numbers and not geographical locators?
