Cushcraft 402CD Comments

Subject: Cushcraft 402CD Comments

Since requesting comments on the 402CD, I have been deluged with mail
regarding this antenna. I have to say that this must be the one most
universally loved piece of ham equipment that I have ever run across in my
almost 20 years of hamming. Even those that had dispariging remarks about the
antennas' less than stellar mechanical properties would say what a great
performer it is. Adjectives such as fantastic, magic, and vodoo were used.

I'll save a lot of bandwidth by saying that everyone (bar none) likes the
electrical characteristics of the antenna ( good gain, F/B, bandwidth of
about 225-250 Khz). Several say that it compares very favorably to other
manufacturer's 3 or 4 element shortened yagis at similar heigths.(Since I had
asked for comments about other 40 meter shortened yagis, I also got a few
good comments on the Force 12 antennas -most using multiband antennas that
include 40 - as well. Looks like N6BT may have a winner on his hands with the
Force series.

We have probably all heard that the Cushcraft antenna is not the greatest
when faced with high winds and/or ice loading. W6QHS, N4KG and others have
done lots of work to make the antenna better for those that live in harsher
environments. I would say that from my reports, that the majority of people
will get by just fine with the stock antenna. Many reported their antennas
being up for 5-7 years with no mods at all, and no mechanical problems. For
modification information, see the following publications:

Based on all of this, I have a brand new 402CD waiting for little elves to
magically mount it at 130' for me. I did some minor mods to it - basically
just reinforced the tubing where the boom/mast and boom/element connections
are made, and I pinned the element plates to the boom to prevent turning.
Cushcraft has improved the method of mounting the cap. hats now so that they
will not turn.

Thanks to all who took the time to share their thoughts on this with me. If I
can answer any questions, please feel free to write...

I forgot to mention that the Kiwa BCB-Reject filter will also allow you to
get rid of that pesky BC pickup on 80-meter and 160-meter antennae.

I assumed K5GA should shave his head for a blatant adnertising of BIG W5*** LA
linears while responding to OH3MEP all in CAPITAL LETTERS! Or does it matter
in USA after O.J. verdict?

Hello Contesters!

A last minute opportunity to operate CQWW SSB from VP9 presented itself
and I could not resist :-)

This will be a single-op all band effort. Antennas for the 160/80/40
are limited to 1/4 wave slopers and no beverages/ewe etc. with a tri-band
beam on the high bands.

If we can get the amp going (without qrm'ing one particular television set :-),
there might be a bit more punch (800-1kw) to the signal, else limited to
100w output...

The call sign will be: VP9DX - QSL via WB2YQH

Hope to contact everyone everywhere this weekend!!!!

Subject: Is CT9 compatible with FT1000?
Message-ID: <199510251420.KAA06829@atlanta.com>

I got my computer interface for the FT1000 working. But, when I tried
to fire up CT9, they wouldn't work together. I can't imagine that these
two would be incompatible, so hopefully I can get some pointers here.

When I run CT 9.23, the screen repeatedly says Yaesu Radio Timeout.
The keyboard is EXTREMELY sluggish, apparently waiting for the radio.
The POLL commands has been removed and I remember the Yaesu owners
asking how the program was going to work, since we needed that
command.

What's the answer? Does the latest version computer interface?
Can 9.23 be made to work?

Thanks very much for the time.

Jeff,

Is it a new FT-1000?
Early models needed a new chip for PC control.
See the FT-990 review in QST for details.
