Wonder if an angle to approach Sports Illustrated with might be to
use Joe Rudy, NK7U, who was a great Baseball player as an example of a
player who has changed sports, but still competes? You familiar with any
other wellknown ballplayers of any sport who also are contesters? Just an

The saga continues......
The TS-950SDX died of transmitter failure (complete with foul
burning odor and a little blue smoke) two days before the
CQ WW SSB contest. Called Kenwood and was told how to
proceed. Packed up the unit and went off to the UPS terminal
here on Kauai. Told the young man at the counter I had to
insure the 55 pound box for $5500, the current list price at
HRO for a TS-950SDX, per their web page price late in
October.
He got excited about the amount, opened the shipping box, and
proceeded to repack the unit. I paid the $70.25 shipping cost
plus another $18.90 for the $5500 in insurance; that was on 10/26/95.
I recv'd a post card notice from Kenwood, dated 11/4 that the
unit had been recv'd. In today's mail, I got a terse letter from
Kenwood, dtd 11/7, quote: "Your unit recently arriaved here at
Kenwood for service. However, it appers to have been damaged in
shipment. On your behaalf, we have had UPS inspect your unit.
We regret to inform you that this claim was not approved by UPS.
They informed us here at Kenwood that the damage was due to
inadiquate packing of the unit.
We need to know if you would like us sto go ahead with the evaluation
of your unit. Although, for repairs, charges will be made to you.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter." ???!!!!????!!
Unfortunately, Kenwood had already closed in Long Beach when the
mail was delivered here late in the afternoon. I then called the UPS
headquarter terminal over in Honolulu and have lodged a formal
complaint, and have requested an investigation of the circumstances
of the re-packing of my TS-950SDX by their Lihue, Kauai employee,
and requested a re-inspection and reconsideration of the earlier
decision in Long Beach by the UPS damage inspector there.
So sweepstakes have gone by, and now I'll be lucky to get the
formal terms of all this straighted out by New Years, and the
Fall contests will all be gone.
For the lack of a horse.....

Since there has been a little chatter on the RTTY reflector about the NCJ
editorial, figured I'd throw in a few comments here for you RTTY-deprived
contesters...
Bruce, AA5B, made the comment "There wasn't very much human interaction
involved..." referring to operating the ARRL RTTY Contest (my LEAST
favorite of them all). Bruce, please explain to me how the yearning for
human interaction is satisfied by pushing a few F keys on CW or pushing a
few buttons on the DVK?
Bottom line, the computerization of the ham shack has removed a lot of
the human factor in any mode. Personally, I like the RTTY contests for
exactly that reason. The family visitors in the shack, and other
distractions don't really disrupt the operating activity. It allows real
human interaction in the shack, rather than being a totally isolating

Error about the price of the missing contest horse!
The $5500 is evidently the current "list price."
Just checked the HRO web page price again,
and is given as $3999.95 (or maybe it was .99).
So I over insured the UPS shipment. Anyhow,
will be very interesting to call Kenwood in the
morning to determine what the "appears to
have been damaged" actually is: banged up
case and heavy damage, groan, or what.
