I spent several daylight hours CQing in the window on Saturday
afternoon, working about 10 stations an hour while reading
magazines. I moved out of the window before sunset when after
one cq I got 2 simultaneous reminders. One helpful person sent
"window", the other sent "lid". Also in the window during
daytime were ab4ru, kq2m, and a few others. None of these
stations stayed there past sunset.

Whenever I heard wb1gqr he was on 1829.9. Even though he was
quite loud in here in NJ, I heard no clicks on his signal. If
anything, I thought his keying was rather soft on make and break,
somewhat like some of the old Collins rigs. I also had a run
frequency about 1KHz below him for a couple of hours Friday night
and did not hear any key clicks then. Perhaps what you thought
were clicks was your receiver's agc pumping, or some distortion
products from an over-driven mixer.

I don't see any point in making lists of stations that used the
window during daylight, transmit with the wrong vfo, or forgot
and moved when reminded. This seems to be the bulk of your list.
If there are any hard-core offenders in it, they are hidden in
the "noise".

One word: YUCK!

Friday started up and talked to Jeff (WC4E at AC4NJ) at the beginning
and then worked about 11 others before there was nothing else over
almost 3 1/2 hours beyond who I already worked. Saturday began about
1200Z when WB2LEZ worked some good African mults on ssb then I came one
and switched between cw and ssb until about 5pm where I there was no
activity at all. The best period was around 1600Z when I worked several
good runs on phone.

Sunday: WB2LEZ found some South Americans and worked our first Brazilian
station and Argintine station around 14Z. Sunday netted barely 20 Q's
for me. I ended it with 2 new mults (IL and IA) on Sunday between 2330
and 0000Z on CW.

I thought last year was bad .... boy was I wrong.

Kudos to K1ZX/4 ... he was everywhere ... (on CW)

Thanks to WB2LEZ for the use of his station. ... Its better than mine
by far. :-)

Here's to better next year (it can't get worse.... though I said that
last year...)

Dear Contesters,

In consultation with Steve, N8BJQ Director of the CQ WPX
contest, CQ Contest magazine is proud to announce a new concept in
contesting.

The 1996 SSB and CW World Wide WPX contests will initiate
three new categories in an effort to encourage entry level and
average antenna stations.

     The new categories are:
     1. Rookie category (Rookie)
     2. Tribander and single element category (TS)
     3. Band restricted category (BR)

The line scores of these new categories will be reported in CQ
magazine. The write-up, tables, box scores and detailed reporting
of the categories will appear in CQ Contest magazine.

Rules for new categories:

I. All three categories shall obey all WPX rules as they appear in
CQ magazine. The deadline and mailing address is the same as
indicated by the WPX rules.

II. All three categories shall be single operator (no assistance),
all band and up to the legal power limit of your license. Choose
only one of the categories indicated, that is, no combinations are
permitted. The entrants remain eligible for certificates and
plaques generally awarded in the single operator all band class.

     A. Rookie category. An entrant in this category shall have
been licensed as a radio amateur three (3) years or less.

     B. Tribander (any type) with a single feedline from the
transmitter to the antenna and single element (TS) category. During
the contest, an entrant shall use only one (1) tribander for
10,15,20 meters and single element antennas on 40,80 and 160.

     C. Band Restricted (BR) category. An eligible entrant must
hold a license restricting operation to less than the six (6)
contest bands (160,80,40,20,15,10) on both modes. Examples of such
licenses are: novice, technician, 4 class license etc. Since
frequency privilges differ from country to country, competition is
within one's own country.

III. The entrant is REQUIRED to indicate plainly on the standard
summary sheet the category chosen: Rookie, TS or BR and supply the
following information:
  Rookie: Date you were licenced.
TS: Detailed description of the antennas
BR: List of the bands available to the operator.

     Thanks to N8BJQ, OH2MM, N6KT, W3ZZ, K1AR, WX9E, WE9V, N4OGW,
G0JFX and K3EST for advice.

The rules, as seen in this announcement for the new
categories, will appear in the FEB issue of CQ Contest magazine,
the CQ-contest internet forum, the WPX write-up for the 1995
contests appearing in CQ magazine, and on CQ Contest magazine's WWW
page at URL:
        http://www.access.digex.net/~cqmag/cqtest.html.

Decided it would be a good weekend to see if my 10m antenna worked. I
hadn't made a QSO on it until Saturday morning. Figured Friday night would
be mostly a waste of my time since it's a 1.5 hour trip and very cold at
night up there. It was 8 degrees on Saturday night! The sleeping bag
worked though.

Antenna seemed to work OK. Not having power devide capability with a 2nd
antenna probably hurt some. Be interested in some signal reports from
anyone that heard me as compared with AB4RU, WS4F, K4PI, or K4PIC.

Building a station is as much a challenge as operating it!
