WriteLog 7.35 is available on Compuserve now. It adds IARU
contest support, FT-1000MP support and other minor stuff.
I've been unable to raise the keepers of the usual ftp sites
by email, so if you want the new version by anonymous ftp,
I need you to point me to a site that will take it.

Dear IARU Participants:
Your log is wanted! Please help us verify our WRTC competitors' logs by
sending us *your* IARU log via e-mail!
Our judges only have about 18 hours after the teams are finished to perform
the log checking process. It would be wonderful to get some logs sent to us
right after the contest ends at 1200Z on Sunday. Or even earlier... the
WRTC portion of the competition ends six hours earlier (at 0600Z). Even a
partial log from you will help us some.
Send CT logs in .BIN format, NA logs in .QDF format, or TR logs in .DAT
format.

I made a query two days ago as to what operating I should have installed when I
purchase a new pentium pc. Besides running various non-ham software, I would
also run AO/YO, EZNEC, DXBase, CT, ARRL Radio Designer and other ham
software. I posed the possibilities as Windows 95 and Windows NT.
Overall, the responses I received heavily leaned towards Windows 95. The
following is a brief synopsis of comments I received:
"Windows 95 is more forgiving when it comes to running non-complient
applications..."
"...you can configure the way you want with Windows NT, whereas Windows 95
automatically does, which sometimes is inconvenient..."
One person comments that it was very hard to give up 3.1 and hated 95 when it
was first loaded, but after time, wouldn't trade it for anything else. Use
what you
feel comfortable with.
"...Being a developer, I have both 95 and NT. NT is really a developers
platform,
where 95 was developed to ease the burden of most casual PC users."
"...problems getting DOS applications to work well with NT, and little to no
problem with 95. This represents a problem to those of us who run ham radio
software, as most of it is DOS-based or is shareware."
"...Most software today is being designed for Windows 95, not NT."
Another comments that most ham applications are designed to run under DOS.
If so, install DOS 6.22. NT is a true relatively stable 32 bit operating
system. 95
is not an operating system, but a shell running on top of a DOS version, which
is
not as good as DOS 6.22. 95 does not have the complete Win32
implementation, which is promised sometime in late '97?
"I've had little luck making EZNEC run under Windows NT as it tries to get more
memory than NT will give it. However I haven't asked Roy about it either and
want to believe it will work with the right incantations."
Heard equal numbers of people who have and have not had problems running
EZNEC under Windows 95.
Received a very detailed look at one person's softwarecomplement, hardware,
and station hookup including all com ports used. I'll keep this as a
reference! In
the end, the switch from 3.1 to 95 has been smooth so far (1 month.)
"I use NT every day at work. Don't try using it for ham applications. Windows
'95
is your only choice for a new purchase and I personally have never found an old
windows ap that won't work with it. NT's problem is that it won't let old DOS
programs get at the LPT and COM ports directly and all contesting software
requires such access.
Overall, I conclude that Windows 95 is either the safest or only way to go
(versus
NT) whent it comes to running any DOS type applications. I feel that, along
with
the user friendliness overrides the advantages in multitasking that NT
provides. I
am going to go with Windows 95 but I will try to keep up more with the
continuing
development in PC operating systems and if it is warranted down the road, may
switch to NT or ???
By the way, I didn't specifically mention it in my original post, but I am
looking to
get either a Dell 166 MHz or possibly a 200 MHz that advertised in the various
PC magazines. After doing this survey, I now wonder in advance what
ham/contest software I may need to get an upgrade to for Windows 95
operation. I have heard mixed views about EZNEC operation I received a few
comments on other software, but feel the number is too low to make any
conclusions. I will be getting in touch with a few of the programmers to see
if
upgrades are available, but if any read this posting, maybe a comment can be
sent to myself and the reflector. I think many others would like the same sort
of
info I am looking for!

First of all I want to let you know that my comment is not
intended to be a flame. I was just wondering what is the purpose
of having an emergency hurricane net on 20 meters when a
hurricane is approching the US ? It seems that with all the media
frenzy that goes on everytime a hurricane approches the east coast
of the US that everyone that needs the latest updates can get it from
the media (either local or national) Even the local TV stations here
in Columbus, Ohio are sending their satelite news trucks to the
Carolinas !! I can understand the purpose the net serves to those
in the islands who might not have access to CNN, Weather Channel etc...
you are providing a valuble service that probably saves some lives
down there.
With a major contest going on this weekend ( and the much
added activity that is expected this weekend with WRTC) I can just
hear the guys handling hurricane stuff blaming contesters for
QRMing their frequency as always........

A copy of the FCG's Official Dupesheet (Operating Aid 6) for the Great WRTC
Pizza Challenge is also available on the site. (Yep; some of us are going
to take a trip down memory lane with a paper and pencil dupesheet this weekend!)
If you load the dupesheet page and hit "print" it will print as two pages
(at least it did using Netscape 2.0 and a Laserjet), but the dupesheet
itself should be the entire first page. Alternatively, you can click on the
dupesheet (which is a .gif image) with your right mouse button and save it
that way.

Remember, this is NOT for submitting your official IARU log. This is for
submitting an unofficial copy to help us grade the WRTC contestants' logs.
The WRTC contestants stop at 11 PM PDT -- 0600Z, six hours before IARU's
regular 1200Z finish. Any partial logs will be of help to us. Remember,
though, we need to get them ASAP after our 0600Z finish. The judges and
referees will be pulling an all-nighter Saturday to determine the winners
sometime early Sunday.

Binary files do, yes, but text files do not. CT's .BIN file needs to be
encoded, but TR-Log's LOG.DAT is text so it does not. The ARRL-compatible
file from CT's WRITEARRL command can be e-mailed without encoding.

Maybe, someone has a list of the HQ stations. From old logs it is possible
to put together one. Att least OI1X will be on the air as SRAL's HQ
station.

WRTC call signs will be raffled before contest and no one knows who is
behind each call sign.

Hurricane Bertha willing (she appears to be!), I will be breaking ground on
my first tower in the coming days. Not wanting to bite off more than I can
chew, I will be putting up a rather small one (KC8MK please no off-color
comments!), 26' of Rohn 25G (3 sections with 4' under the ground). This will
serve as a home for VHF antennas, and my old Cushcraft A3 until such time
that I am ready for some real metal.
Anyway, my question is rather simple - should I use a wooden form for the
base? And if so, should I remove the form immediately after pouring the cement?
