for what it is worth:
My fifteen meter WRTC totals were my achiles (sp?) heel, only 48 teams. Looks
like AC1O also had 15 meter shortages as well...I was using a second radio
for receive and with 10 in one ear and 15 in the other - once it opened, 10
meter signals seemed way better! It was fun to work 51 teams on ten, I
really was shocked....something tells me that almost all the second operators
had their ears on ten meters and let the run man know "GO TO TEN, NOW!" The
band was never that hot in the 10 meter contest.
I kept listening on the second rx to AB6FO on 15 meters and hoped some of the
needed WRTC guys would go back to fifteen to help me make at least 51 WRTC
QSOs like I had on 10, but no joy. AB6FO was comin thru on 15 when the rest
of the West was not....out of curiousity were you using a linear....I asked
one of the WRTC guys to pse go to 15 for me and we couldn't make it, never
heard him (thanks anyway W6I team).....OR perhaps AB6FO was beaming
"South"....I find this anomole interesting. Mebbe you just had a lil better
prop being farther South.
Glad you had some fun. A great S&P event. But which team won? I am anxiously
awaiting the news....can't wait to find out. My guess is that the winner will
have correctly hit the 10 meter opening instantly when it came and will have
a worked 40cw like it was SS, vy QRQ! But heah...I said this a month ago.
Hopefully the news will hit the internet tonight, or at least before I go to
work tmw AM.
I can't believe I had so much fun in a contest where my rate was about
13/hour! After catching the 20 meter sweep I went to bed for a lil over two
hours since 15 and 10 were history and it would be a while before 40 went
long to the West.
I was pleased at the AH3C and AH3D teams' job - I was worried they might me
marginal efforts by their labels but they were right in there....especially
liked the touch one of them, and several others used of being really low on
the band - sounding like rare DX...some of the less informed probably got
real excited with the AH3 pfx, hi.
Congrats on the quick Sweep....it took 6:24 minutes before I finally got W6Z,
I gave up on them in the first hour on 40, tried wkg them for almost ten
minutes in vain, in the end you'll never guess which one WRTC stn I missed on
40...contests are like a box of chocolates, you never know who you aren't
gonna work!
AC1O - we gotta talk about how many times you beat me out in the piles, I
heard 8 or 10 times that you beat me...how many did I beat you? You seem to
have a reallly good handle on this Low Power thang. I think that I need to
find out your tricks.
The beam was turned "West" on Friday night and then unplugged, when 15 was so
rough I plugged it in and tried some slightly skewed paths but the beam ended
up back where I had left it. NA10.04 showed up in the mail on Thursday and I
risked using it, no probs...not like it was a real workout for the software
with 206 Qs! Tnx to W1YL (those meatloaf sandwiches were great, Ma) and to
W1CW for as usual a great operating exrience. What's next, NAQP?
I predict the WRTC team winner will have a "K6" call.

What with some antennas not operational plus other commitments, a major
effort for IARU was not possible. So I played around in the contest with
the time available. Great South America opening on 80 and 40 for KL7 land!
At one point I had 51 of the 52 1x1 stations in the log so I decided I
should go find K6S. After a couple of hours I found him on 40, don't know
why I never heard them on 20. Now after the contest I find that AH3C and
AH3D were also competitors. My apologies to AH3D whom I passed by many
times, but never called after hearing the Zone 6. So I did get all the 52
1x1 calls, but I guess I didn't get a sweep. Using DX calls for this was a
poor decision on someone's part. The sigs from the WRTC guys on 40 were
hardly equal here, it was not uncommon to find an S7 1x1 next to an S0 1x1.
It was also obvious some locations heard much better than others. Local
QRN? Don't think the WRTC proved anything operator-wise, but it was kind of
fun for a change.

If it were not for WRTC, I wouldn't have been operating the IARU contest.
Not that it's a bad contest, mind you (matter of fact, working everybody
for points was neat), it's just that I don't do a lot of contesting during
the summer.
With that said, I hope it's understandable that I don't know what ITU Zone
I am in. CQ Zone, well that's easy. ITU zone? Uh.........
I checked the '95 ARRL Handbook. Nope. How 'bout the K1DG CQ Almanec.
No way. The Internet? Zippo. The rules? Nadda. Where's one of them
fancy maps with both zones on it? Not in my house.
So, I call my local contesting guru, Mike N0BSH. Ask Mikey... he knows
everything! Mikey says that he signed Zone 8 one time and made a comment
about it on the contest reflector, and was told that he should have signed
zone 7, because the zone border runs on the 90th latitude line (was told
this from a famous league person with a K1 prefix). Wisconsin is split
down this line, and we live to the west of the line, putting us in zone 7.
Well, if it's good enough for Mikey and an ARRL staffer, it's good enough
for me. Zone 7 it is.
So I hit the contest, and a few people say that because I'm in W9 I should
be zone 8. I just figure they don't know what they're talking about. I
even heard W0AIH signing Zone 8, and they are directly north of me. Then
the big surprise. One of the WRTC teams slams me for signing zone 7.
"When are you going to figure out that Wisconsin is in Zone 8." I replied,
"It isn't done by Districts," to which they reply "Yes it is!!". Maybe
some other words are exchanged... all-in-all I was surprised they would
waste even 30 seconds of contesting time to teach me a lesson. Personally,
I'd just take the zone and "QRZ!" !! (unless some KE6 gives me "59 number
1")
So... where does one find out what zone they are in?
