Aha, thats the problem...the location of your callsign correction.

The most important part of any contest exchange's information is the
callsign, SO:

Do Not Save Correcting It 'Til The End!!! A QRQ guy will have already punched
the F3/"tnx" button as soon as he heard your zone! He has everything that he
needs for a qso, he thinks!

When he has your call wrong come back with something akin to
"bk de K1ZX k1zx 5nn8" (This of course if the guy comes back to K1ZZ and you
KNOW it is that he is working!"

Fix the problem quickly, he also will be scrolling his cursor over to the
exchange fields and "going back" to the callsign field is but another
step....

I like to send the call TWICE on a correct so it hits home that the call
needs to be fixed, and it also gives him time if he (apologies KU2Q) is as
slow a typist as myself...

Hopefully I will soon not have to be confused with other K1Z_ and other K1_X
calls, but I imagine luck will have it that there will be someone else with a
call like AC4O.

TIC (that's Tongue In Cheek - not the ringrotor)

I had a similar problem with a couple of the WRTC and IARU boys...

they would go off half cocked with my call sign wrong... I had to sit
on QRG for at least a QSO or two calling again and again to make
the correction. Fortunately, and even at QRP levels, most of them
picked up on the fact that I was trying to get them to correct my call in
their logs. I know in one case where I worked the guy; he had my
call wrong, but went "W/K6(put a letter here) test"; I had to call him
through 2 QSO's before he recognized me again and then he logged
me as a QSO. So somewhere on someone's log there is KG5U
following by a QSO or two KG5U-something....

Remember guys: When a station sends his callsign back to you,
it is, in my mind at least, a flag that you need to check to see if you
copied it correctly the first time. My normal exchange (probably to
the chagrin of the speed demons in and out of WRTC) was "his call,
sig report, zone". When I knew they did not get my call right, I made
it a point to send "my call, sig report, zone" or "his call, sign report,
zone,
my call". In all cases except one, folks picked up on the correction.

Oh well....things happen...

Dale

HI TOM,
believe me: I don't want starting a polemic....WRTC is over.
Sorry if judges wiped our qso only considering the matter I worked only W6D.
As I wrote in my last message....why they ask us sending our partial logs to
make better checks? I went in hurry to encode my .Bin file and a receipt was
receiving here.....!!??
IMHO I mean that if one makes a mistake, correction would be the least thing
to do.
You missed a multiplier and probably I will miss the lone souvenir from WRTC
: your qsl card.
Sure is that if our qso was wiped, surely no label with my call up will be
printed and rules are clear: do not send qsl card, Committee will send to all
in the logs....hi.
So the offence will become double.
Any way to repair that? Do you need my .bin file? If needed, please let me
know.
Ciao Sante.

Anecdotes from W6R (K6LL + N2IC)

------------------------------------------------------------------

Some background in preparation for the WRTC:

I flew up to Steve's house for WPX cw, where we practiced using his
low tribander and a specially-constructed 40 m inverted vee. We used
three different callsigns over the course of the weekend, to keep the
activity level high for maximum training effect. We learned several
important things during this practice session:

- Without the computer's RS-232 port connected to the transceiver,
there is a significant probability that contacts would be logged with
the wrong band or mode selected on the computer. For that reason, we
decided not to use our favorite logging program, TR-log, for the WRTC,
since it is difficult to correct previous qso's.

- For a multiplier excursion to another band, it was important to
develop a routine procedure. The radio B op handled the rotor, antenna
switch, and computer band/mode. The Radio A op concentrated on getting
radio A onto the new frequency. As soon as the mult was worked, the
reverse procedure was immediately initiated, and radio A went back to
the original run frequency. After a while we could pull this routine
off like a Richard Petty pit stop.

- At the time of the WPX contest, the WRTC rules specifically prohibited
the use of bandpass filters on either radio. We rapidly discovered that
synthesized radios transmit wideband noise whenever they are in the
transmit mode, even with the key up, across several bands! This
is not to be confused with front-end overload of radio B. There is no
filtering at radio B which will solve this problem. It has to be done at
Radio A. After the WPX, the rules were clarified to allow internal
modifications to the transceivers. Coaxial stubs were internally added
to both transceivers, and the wideband noise was brought down to
insignificant levels. Switches were added in the radios to select the
proper stubs. It was real fun trying to stuff 25 feet of RG-58 inside the
cabinets of the TS-850 and TS-950! The Kenwood service technicians should
have seen those radios! (Speaking of Kenwood, they were conspicuous in
their absence from the list of WRTC sponsors. What's with those guys
anyway?)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday afternoon, just before the WRTC contest:

We got down to our host's station and set everything up. For some
reason, the latest version of NA software would not key the radio
through the LPT port on Steve's antique computer. We ran around in
tight little circles for about an hour, trying to make it work, and
then decided to switch to CT. It worked fine.

When we first cranked up the TS-950, we noticed that the internal
wattmeter was reading 150 watts, and the external Autec unit was
reading 120 watts. Our host volunteered his Bird wattmeter, and it
read 85 watts! Steve and I exchanged glances, and immediately began
spouting the praises of the Bird wattmeter, about how it's a laboratory
standard, the choice of professionals, the standard of comparison,
built like a battleship, etc. We must have overdone that little song
and dance though, because our referee pounced on the Bird and dragged
it off to the Motel 6 to compare it to the OFFICIAL WRTC WATTMETER.
The Bird turned out to be about 30% low, so we didn't get to use it.
Darn!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

During the contest:

When the contest started at 0500, Radio A started running stations
and hardly ever went to S&P. We depended almost entirely on radio B
to find multipliers. Preprinted paper check sheets of ARRL countries,
zones, HQ stations and WRTC callsigns were used. Each time a new mult
was found, other than the most mundane, which we were sure to work later,
radio A stopped the run, worked the mult if possible, and then
immediately
went back to the run frequency, hopefully with stations still waiting
and the packet spots still valid. We alternated the operators between
radio A and B on the hour. Radio A stayed on cw unless we thought
we could double the rate on SSB. There were times on SSB when Steve had
the CT last 10 QSO rate was over 550 and the last 100 rate was over 350.
Absolutely unbelievable and unforgettable! When the contest was over, I
truly thought we had won. I couldn't believe, as was the case, that it
had been just as frantic an 18 hours for many of the other competitors.
The level of competition was truly intense!

In retrospect, the only thing I can think of that we should have done
differently is to more actively pursue moving mults from band to band.
We did it a few times, but could have done it more. Steve was more
diligent at it than I was.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

We found a couple new items to add to Tree's list of "ways to irritate
your WRTC partner"

- Open a box of Quaker Oats cereal squares, loudly rustle the wax paper
inside, and chomp furiously on the little squares. It was enough to trip
the vox, bury W6QHS's signal under the qrm, and render any line noise
inconsequential.

- Consume mass quantities of bean burritos early in the contest, with
predictable results.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me conclude by thanking again all of the organizers, sponsors,
host stations, judges, referees, and contest participants throughout
the world who made this WRTC an unforgettable experience. Standing up to
receive the bronze medal was the highpoint of my amateur radio career.

A special thanks to our hosts Dave Barton, AF6S, and his charming
wife Susan, KA6SEH, who made us feel completely welcome and at ease
operating from their San Jose QTH. They are two of the nicest people
you would ever want to meet. Special thanks also to our referee, Scott
Jones, WR3G, who spent 18 boring hours listening to someone else
operate, when he would rather have been applying his own excellent
operating skills.

Everyone has his own preferences but my vote on the best paddle goes
to the Mercury magnetic keyer paddle made by Steve N2DAN. Not only
has Steve had a unique design for the past 15 years but it is truely
a "quality" built piece by a top machinist to his own demands. These
are collectors paddles with callsigns engraved in the bases and
recorded serial numbers.

Hi Cleve, you can thank me in part for the heavier HamKey. I worked at
Ham Radio Center in St. Louis from 1976 to 1982. The first HamKeys were
light weight and my boss, W0KF, asked me to bring in my Brown Brothers
Paddles so they could weight it. The HamKeys were made in the St. Louis
area and the Manufacture made sure that the rest of the HamKeys were
heavier. Also the problem was not with the silver contacts, but with the
resistance of the metal base. Instead of cleaning the contacts, if you
ran a wire from the center post underneath to the middle terminal, thus
bypassing the base, there was no more problem.

One last note, thanks to all the guys who have sent me notes directly.

I bought mine as my first "real" paddle sometime around 1977.
I think this was right about the time they started to slow the
"production". Up until then, the only other paddle I ever had
used was a Vibroplex - what was it called ? - a Blue Racer, I
think. I still use that BB as my only keyer paddle ! Matter of
fact, I think it still has the original "hinge's". I hear that's
pretty rare since they work harden and crack pretty easy. I run
my contact spacing pretty tight, so maybe thats why.

I'm always on the lookout for another. I saw an ad in the Ham
Trader yellow sheets for one about a year ago, for $25 !!! We
get the sheets a day before most everyone else because we're pretty
close to the mailing point but, the guy said he had over 50 calls
already and if he ever has one to sell again, the going price will
be ONE HUNDRED and $25....

I collect paddles and operate using the one I consider as being
the best for me. In order of preference: W9WBL's V2L, Bencher
single action (BY-1???), Vibroplex Iambic, Brown Bros, Schurr
Portabel-Wabbler, Vibroplex (HAMCO) Brass Racer, and Kent (very,
very smooth, but too low to the deck).
The W9WBL key was highlighted in K4TWJ's Feb '96 CQ magazine
article on keys. Believe me, it's underpriced for the performance
and workmanship. No, I don't get a kickback for praising it.
This issue is too emotional for me not to put in my two cents'
  worth in.
As an aside, about 5% of my contacts in IARU screwed-up my call,
and as Jim (ZX...or is it ZZ???)said, they hit the F3 button and
can't take the time to correct the call. Tough luck for them, and
incentive for me for Gate 2!!!

Wayne -

I bought a Kent "single lever" (non-iambic) keyer a few years ago and
have been very pleased with it except for it being somewhat difficult to
adjust. They are solid brass construction with ball bearing pivots,
which makes them VERY smooth! Their keyers are available as a kit, which
is how I got mine, at some savings. The assembly is not difficult and
it's fun to see how things go together, at least for me. Check out ads
in QST, etc. No, I don't have any connection with the company :-)

My first paddle was a Lafayette Radio (NY) bug, converted into a
single-lever paddle, for use with my HAL keyer. I believe the HAL keyer
was the first product they ever made (correct me if I'm wrong), with the
spider-style ICs (RTL?). Then when I built my Acuu-keyer, bought the
Brown Bros paddle, and still has the original hinges too. (sri, not for
sale). I found it slid around the desk too easily, so use the Bencher
now. Advantage of the Brown Bros paddle compared with Bencher is if you
hit it the wrong way, little pieces don't go flying across the room!

Hi Dale, nice to hear from you. I agree with you statement about the
HamKey. It was an entry level paddle. The BrownBros paddle used a "Leaf
spring" on the levers. The HamKey used a pivot and the levers moved up
and down a bit at higher speeds. This made for chopper sending.

The HamKey was the right paddle at the right time. Lots of guys just got
keyers as the TTL logic made the electronics cheap.

There are a lot of good paddles out there. Just what you get used to. I
did not like the Bencher. It uses the "FYO" style springs. Never could
feal good about it.

Thanks again and cu in the CW contest (with the keyboard!)

I, too, use a Brown Bros paddle/key combo. The trick to getting it to
stay put is to, uh, expectorate on the rubber feet and then push them down
onto the desktop for about 5 seconds...stays put for the whole contest!

Boy, do I feel like an idiot.

I was on the NCCC board that selected our club's entry, N6TV.

I am on the WRTC board, so I figured it would be a Good Thing to be in all the
logs at least once. Besides, there's a prize. And I'm a sucker for little
prizes. My wife is absolutely thrilled with our coffee cup service for 12
 (Sweepstakes, Bouvet, Peter 1, etc.)

So I get this checklist for K6A thru K6Z and W6A through W6Z. K1ZZ and I
operated two adjacent stations, swapping frequently because one station was a
lot better than the other. We each kept our lists. When it got down to a few
for each of us we shared the list of those needed, and if one of us came across
someone the other guy needed we'd hand over the key or microphone.

So I checked off all 54 stations, AH3C and AH3D included. Great, got the
sweep! And then I went out to hustle people around (sponsors visiting stations,
etc.)

But after I submitted my checklog I found that I had failed to work K6W. It
wasn't in my log, and it wasn't in K6W's log.

You can guess the rest. K6W turned out to be the NCCC entry, N6TV and K7SS.

Those of you receiving the "sweep" deck of cards should know how lucky you are
that my design suggestion didn't prevail. I suggested that we should have a
picture of the WRTC board, in bathing suits, on the back of each card.
Fortunately for you all I didn't prevail and you get the WRTC 96 logo instead.

My congratulations to all the participants that really made WRTC a success.
The teams made over 100K QSOs in 18 hours. About 2/3 of those Qs were on CW.

Others have used mouse pads, or resorted to permanently affixing them
to the operating desktop. Another good method is to visit your local
"Kitchen Kaboodle" or similar type housewares store or department and
pick up some small 15cm x 15cm (6" x 6") cloths that are used
specifically for opening glass jars. Similar materials are used
under carpets to keep them from sliding on hardwood floors. They're
pretty good and relatively cheap .. and they have the advantage of
not permanently scarring the desktop (as with screws) nor of raising
the paddle too far off the desk (as with mouse pads).

FWIW, I have several iambic and non-iambic paddles - my favorite being
the Bencher single lever with the oval shaped finger/thumb pads (not
those triangular ones!) and the other being a very small Hi-Mound
iambic paddle that I picked up in Japan awhile back. Small, but
heavy.

In IARU I worked W3AU, and see him listed in the letter-opener list. Is
that the W3AU of M/M fame, or a reissue?

Try replacing the plastic paddles with super flexible
Fender Guitar picks. I use ones Fender calls 'Heavy'...
they are quite large (for a guitar, but perfect for
paddles) and triangular in shape. I find sending with
them to be a real joy...

WOW.......the list contestants and judges was pretty much a who's who in
contesting but geeeez.......the shirts, cards and qsl card envelope opener
list really rounds out the field!! Excellent turnout. Noticed a number of
calls that I haven't seen/heard in ages....maybe this will jump start them
back into contesting!

Envelope/mailing label is made out......gotta steal the check book from
YL.......think I'll get one of those shirt display cases and hang it in
there. Anybody think the winners will autograph?

One story I haven't heard shared yet - Danny, K7SS was the first
to work all of the WRTC stations and he did it before the contest
started.

He took a sweatshirt and went around until he had signatures from
all of the operators. The last ones he needed were the IT9's
and there was a good band opening sometime on Thursday night and
he nabbed them.

He did use some of us for spotting however, so it wasn't a true
single op effort however.

Gaaaaaahg.......never thought that operating at N0AX might entail a bio-hazard!

Go to your local RV dealer and get a roll of no slide shelf paper. It's
sort of a rubber sticky mesh stuff that keeps things from moving around in
RV's as you head off to FD. I cut a piece that is the size of my NYE paddle
base. Keeps it from moving quite well. Besides, it keeps those nasty
brown stains from the Skole Team Radiosports operators off your desk.

Another trick is to cut a small square (4"X4") of the rubberized shelf
matting available from RV suppliers and many hardware outlets. Looks like
window screen dipped in rubber. Works wonder under a bug or paddle.

Do what I did (I'm using Brown Brothers):

Gouge out (not all the way through) three holes to match the paddle foot
placement in a mouse pad. I placed the holes at the far end of the pad, so
the small finger and palm heel of my hand reast on the pad.

Works great.

Hi Paddle users....I have used the BB BTL-A, and its look alike from
Hamkey, vibrokeyer/non-iambic, brass racer, bencher/black base...

I'd have to say the BB is too light fer my FIST...The hamkey was heavier,
but the silver contacts weren't reliable,. The vibrokeyer was...
well...non-iambic. I didn't use the brass racer long enough to say. And I
now, have the 35.00 bencher...Actually the hamkey new was 29.95...The BB
was most expensive, bought from a collector who wanted to sell but only
at his price....And I WANTED one....never mind the price...

KA9FOX has the 1996 claimed scores up on his web page. There are also in
the August CQ (which I have not seen yet).

I have not been able to get to more of the 1995 DX certificates, but I did
get 22 plaques in the assembly line. I plan on woking on the Dx
certificates and getting the last 7 plaques out the door as top priorities.

Do not see any "funny" logs in the 1996 set yet. Did test out my new
"checking" program and it did all the logs sent to me on diskette in 1 hour
and 3 minutes. I have a problem in getting all the corrected scores
displayed, but found the problem so that will be fixed right away. The
master log showed a drop of nearly 4% on CW and 3% on SSB...and I got about
200 fewer logs in 1996 over the 1995 record.

The big news is 4 stations on CW broke thru 1 million points and they aren't
ALL in Aruba or Curacao!

Will be traveling most of the next two weeks so be patient if you send me an
E-mail.

Stay cool, keep the rigs on, and plan that next antenna!

My Dad used to always ask me before I entered a contest, "How do you
expectorate?"
My answer: "I dunno, but I'll do my best."

----
I have 304 Q's in my WRTC log, not counting 12 AH3 Q's. The results showed
297. Congrats to WW7Q who won zone 6 with 299. I wonder if my "not in log"
Q's were on "the phone?" If they'da had a phone test to get a license I
never woulda passed. Had a super, super time. Thanks to one and all. If any
company were run as well as this seemed to be I'd put all my assets into
it's stock.
