40M Vertical/80M Inv L

Subject: 40M Vertical/80M Inv L
From: ehayes@VNET.IBM.COM (ehayes@VNET.IBM.COM)
Date: Tue Oct 29 08:57:30 1996
During the contest last weekend, I noticed several times that
my old quarter wave 40M vertical was better than my half slopers.
I had planned on removing the vertical and putting a 80M inverted
L (don't have an antenna for 80) in its place but now am having
second thoughts. So, I'm going to try something different. I'm
going to leave the 40m vertical but build a coaxial trap (ON4UN's
book) and put it on top of the vertical and add enough wire to
get it to also resonate on 80. The question is...what is the
best frequency to build the 40M trap for? All of the references
seem to have different ideas on the subject.

Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I will be active again from Labuan Island (IOTA OC-133) as 9M6NA for CQ WW
DX Contest CW. I will be on 80m single band this year, hoping to break the
oldest continental record of the contest set by VR3AH back in '76. QSL via
JE1JKL (OK via JARL bureau). Please look for me in the contest.

The rules never seem to cover this regular occurance, but then rules can't
cover everything.

I log the contact as a current contact and put a note in the log stating
what he told me about the prior QSO. eg. "; TA2KK sez dupe @1455Z day 1"

Sometimes I have to wait for him to make another QSO to get the exchange,
and if a serial number is involved, I use that number.

After the contest, I make certain the logging software counts the QSO
correctly, (some overzealous person might call this massaging), send in
my entry and sleep with a clear conscience.

No log checker has ever told me this practice is unacceptable , but then my
scores from my home station are never high enough to get maximum scrutiny.

Subject: Dupes

Hi all,

I always work the dupes (when they call me!) even if my computer show DUPE.=
That way if my first QSO obviosly not is in the other guys log the second=
 one is. =20

This way the score is correct on both sides and I end up with a dupe in the=
log which is ofcourse a 0 point QSO. This is also a reason for not removing=
dupe QSO=B4s from the final log sent to the contest comittee just mark=
 them.

I think that it must be better for all parts if the dupe QSO is made as=
otherwise there will be a discrepancy between the logs. Making the dupe=
QSO ALWAYS take shorter time than disrupting a pileup to let someon

know he is a dupe as he might want to check what is wrong and might insist=
 on working you anyway.

Let=B4s assume that I work P5A on 80 M. In my computer it is logged correct.=
 But due to some mysterious

reason P5A logged me on 40 M (could be that he just worked a multiplier on=
that band and forgot to change back)

When I later call him on 40M he says dupe and wont let me work him. Now if I=
just give up I loose the multiplier on 80 and 40 due to his error.=
Furthermore he looses one multiplier on 80 M as that QSO will show an error=
in the log when the logs are matched and he will also loose the multiplier=
on 40 as maybe I was the only SM he worked. (my wish!?)

This means there will be dupes in the log ofcourse but on the other hand the=
QSO=B4s are there so the contest-committe will quickly see that the first=
bad QSO is logged on the wrong band and then they can remove that

QSO for both participants if they want however the second real QSO with be=
in both logs and thus be counted as it should be.

If you say to a station that he is a dupe what does that mean? Well to me it=
means either you have something wrong in your log or the other station has=
an error in his. Since you are not allowed to "massage the log" this means=
that your so called first QSO can=B4t be counted as it will not show up in=
 the other guy=B4s log.

No matter who is at fault when the dupe appears in the log the thing should=
be that now you have a chance of making a real QSO. Then ofcourse working=
the dupes will give you an idea about how bad your or other peoples=
operating are as the more dupes you have showing up at the end the more you=
need to look into why the dupes are showing up at all. As said it can be=
your fault but it can also be the other operator.

Working a dupe is ok, not marking them is a no-no!
