A was explaining the Nov. Sweepstakes exchange to a friend of
mine and he asked me why is your callsign part of the exchange?
I didn't have a good answer for him. Does anybody know how the
Sweepstakes exchange came into being and why your callsign
is a part of it?

WELL anything under 30 sounds REAL young to me.
I consulted the EXCELLENT 1996 CQ Amateur Radio Almanac, edited
by K1DG and WZ1R. They have done a great job for the most part.
CQWW first run in 1939 probably with phone and CW the same weekend
1940 event cancelled
the contest as we know it began both modes separate weekends
in 1948.
I suspect this is accurate information, although there are a few errors
in Gavels won by FRC in ARRL SS and ARRL DX contests, which I suspect
will be fixed in the 1997 issue.

Since there are no regulations about limiting SSB for DX in the 7.0 to
7.1Mhz, the CQ WW committee could only ASK that stations refrain from
operating or asking for replies below 7.04Mhz.
Hey, its only two or three weekends per year when this happens on a large
scale. Chasing off the illegal ops near 7.0Mhz (point to point?) is a
better use of time. The real solution is to give DX more of 40. Remember
the SSB ops are fighting the other digital modes between 7070 and 7095. Why
not put them between 7040 and 7050 and move SSB up?

As is the case in most contests, the reason for their existence
was to better prepare operators for emergencies, etc.
The SS exchange was based on the NTS message preamble.
By the way - the original reason has gone by the way or else
the 5nn nonsense would be a broken 'Q'. (Rules were that you did not
interpret - put down only what you copied!)

Aloha and thanks to the many responding with info
about the Hy Tower by HyGain. Guess it is a bit
too much for me out here; must come by freight
as it includes three 8' sections of Rohn, and is to
be set in a 3' cube of concrete in the ground.
My neighbors would not aprove, as it would
probably not look much as a palm tree does to
them!! I anly got my trebndr permit after
doing h&w type stuff for all the neighbor
hood surrounding here after Iniki 4 years ago.
To not push my luck, will go with something
that might not look so large; maybe that German
antenna of which someone wrote that FW2EH
is using, the Titanex Antenna; a tall (20m, 60+'), thin
Aluminum and Titanium affair, maybe similar to the
Battlecreek Special?
Anyhow, thank you all again for the many pieces of info
sent along about the Hy Tower. Still priced as available
by both HRO and AES. Wonder if they ever have heard of
the Titanex?
