season ZZ2Z. I hope the communications authorities issue me it. Let's

An interesting discussion on contest calls.
There is certainly something to be said for having a call that is easy to
ditinguish on CW and has good phonetics on SSB. The one element
that I find missing from the discussion is familiarity. How well I remember
calls like W4KFC, W3GRF and W4BVV. These fine ops got through the
pileups with good signals and excellent operating skills for sure, but the
familiarity of there calls was worth an S unit or two. Vic, as my mentor,
said his call was like his name and he would never change it. Lenny got
a one by two, but never used it very much. Both Lenny and Vic had a
very distinguishable swing with their bugs. I remember that after each SS,
some devious sole would always send Lenny a photo of an electronic
keyer, but he never took the bait.
How many QSO's would W3LPL lose in a contest based on the familiarity
factor? In my case, I followed Vic's advice and did not get a two letter call
way back when, but after being out of the country for 5 years, the familiarity
of my old call had all but vanished. So with this new program coinciding
with my return, I traded in K3WUW (try that on SSB) for W3PP.
Now to rebuild that familiarity factor.
