What antennas were you using?  At what heights?

With high sunspots, you may see 30 to 40 degrees in the AFTERNOON.

Above 40 degrees is highly unlikely, even with high sunspots during
mid day.

Best height for USEFUL high angles on 20 meters is 35 to 45 ft
HORIZONTALLY polarized with a horizontal boom (NOT straight up).

Without some sporadic E propagation or backscatter, working within
500-600 miles on 20 meters at dusk or later will be highly unlikely
and difficult.
