I believe that at the very least, contest sponsors should consider
publishing both the entrant's ''claimed score'' and the "final score." To
publish one without the other is to omit a frame of reference against which
the effort can be measured.
We all ought to be striving for a UBN/NIL rate of a fraction of 1 percent.
I think it could be valuable to contestants to know if they placed where
they did (that is, in relationship to others), because of a good or bad
UBN/NIL score. We ought to be making contest heroes out of people with low
rates. Perhaps there ought to be a trophy awarded for ''lowest UBN/NIL.''
Current rules don't throw out uniques -- but I'd tend to be somewhat
suspicious of the score of someone who finished ahead of me with a very
high percentage of uniques.
I'm not trolling for flames -- but I think we ought to discuss this issue
at length.
