[CQ-Contest] UBN Reports...They are great!

I have ordered (they used to cost a few bucks via the US Mail) UBN
reports every year since K3EST made them available. They are a very
valuable tool for operators and station building.
I am grateful for the hundreds of hours K3EST and the CQWW Contest team
puts in checking and scoring logs.

I make certain the contest men that operated here on those weekends get
copies of the UBN reports so that they can see what happened as well.

In the 1997 CQWW Phone contest we made 6670 QSOs
of that 267 were dupes, 4 percent, or about 1 dupe every 25 QSOs.
I would say most dupes call us. We work them and log them.

Of the 6403 claimed QSOs 220 were with USA stations.
This is 3.4% of valid QSOs or about 1 USA QSO every 29 QSOs.
I would also say 100 percent of those 220 USA QSOs call us.
We work them and log them.

Is every USA QSO logged, probably not.
Is every DX QSO logged, probably not.

It happens....QSOs are TWO WAY exchanges between TWO stations.
Things can and do go wrong due to various reasons. ONE of the reasons is
that ONE station does not log the QSO.

So how can it be that some USA stations claim to work K3LR and are NIL
at K3LR?
It happens, just like there are 43 QSOs in the K3LR log that are NIL of
other stations.

I expect 19 or so of these 43 NILs to be removed. Really not bad for
6403 QSOs (about 0.3%). The other NILs show calls close to the K3LR call
and a two way QSO probably took place. Although the other station may
loose the QSO due to miscopying the K3LR callsign. All of the 43 NILs
are with stations outside the USA.

Things get a bit more interesting on CW.

We worked 6949 total QSOs.
There were 308 dupes, 4.4% or 1 dupe every 22 QSOs.
Same story, most all call us. We work them and log them.
I've even confirmed 2 QSOs on the same band mode during the same contest
with 2 QSLs.
Yep, the station wanted the DUPE confirmed.
Whatever it takes.

Of the 6641 claimed QSOs, 254 were with the USA.
3.8% or 1 USA QSO every 26 QSOs.
Every USA QSO calls us. We work them and log them

K3LR's UBN shows 65 NILs, of that I expect 32 (0 .48%) or so to be
removed. The other NILs follow the same pattern as Phone.

However, the CW NIL report shows 7 NILs with USA stations!
Now, how can this be?
The USA station calls K3LR, we work him, log him, then HE doesn't put
K3LR in his log!
What is wrong with this picture?

How can it be that of the 7 USA NILs, one USA station is NIL on 3
different bands?
He calls K3LR for QSOs on 3 bands and doesn't log K3LR once?
This is strange.

What does this all mean?
It means everyone CAN and WILL make mistakes.

The contest is over.... it was fun.... can't wait until October!

Let's enjoy the UBN reports, but sending nasty grams (to DX or USA)
doesn't do any good.

Remember, The UBN reports are GUIDES for the CQWW log checkers.
Just because the computer flags it as bad, NIL or unique, doesn't mean
that it will come out.

In most every case, your final score is not what is at the bottom of
your UBN report.

Have a great summer of station building and get ready for the world's
largest 48 hour QSO party, the 1998 CQWW DX Phone Contest!

Very 73!
