Hi everybody,
I have to totally disagree with SM2EKM's observations that the new WPX
rules makes the contest the "American QSO Party". At the bottom of this
message you will see my breakdown by continent and multipliers by
country. I think my log will be representative of an "active" station
who operated nearly the full 36hrs and is hoping to do well in his/her
category.
Let's look first at the claims - that allowing 1 point QSOs between
stations of the same country is unfair to EU and benefits the US
entirely. Note that SM2EKM comes from EU, where he can run other EU
stations all day long outside of his country, which gives him 1 point
per Q. But wait! The group of countries known as the European Union are
now starting to use a common currency known as the Euro and is being
called the "United States of Europe". Maybe they would like it better to
only have 1 point ON ALL BANDS for working each other like the new rule
for the US. Right now EU gets DOUBLE points on 40/80/160 so that makes
it even more advantageous for EU to work EU on those bands, and you can
go on and on like this forever with your own agenda.
The new rule makes sense for everyone- not just the US. There will be
more US stations on the air for EU to work! This will only make the
contest more exciting! By the way, I worked over 2300 stations, and
SM2EKM was not in my log. Why not try the contest with the new rules,
instead of blindly complaining about something you havn't even tried?
You can't judge the rules success or failure by listening to a radio -
you have to operate!
AB2E results: 839 multipliers, 2341 QSOs.
Total # US stations worked: the breakdown says 24.8% for all of North
America, so if I take out VE and Carib. let's say 500 Qs with US.
Total mults from US: 432.
That gives me a net gain of about 65 QSOs out of about 500 stations, of
which I would have worked at least the 432 for multipliers under the old
rule. But for a good analysis, let's subtract 500 QSO points from my
total and recalculate my total under last year's rule. My 5.326Meg score
would drop to 4.907Meg - a drop of 8%.
The 1998 SSB WPX World High results were the following:
#1 EUrope station: GI0KOW - 10,563,579 - #7 WORLD
#1 US station: KQ2M - 7,443,720 - #17 World
With an 8% US advanage, Bob's (KQ2M) score would increase to 8,039,000,
and would move up only to #15 WORLD! With the new rule, Bob's score is
still 24% lower than GI0KOW. Now, where is the advantage to US stations
with the new rule?
So, pity all those poor Europeans with the unfair rules that favor those
Americans who make up all the rules!
