Subject: [CQ-Contest] SO2R
Message-ID: <10df01bfcc52$5b397520$ede3c23f@kr6x.org>

SO2R is the buzz word of the day. I was running SO2R at W6HX beginning in
1970, and I believe that Phil, N6ZZ, while winning the SS CW contest from
W6RW a few years earlier, should be reported as SO4R. Of course, we were
both changing chairs to change bands in those days... I'm not sure that
stereo headsets were commonly available back then, either... that's what
happens as you get older...

I felt that I'd perfected SO2R at W6HX about 3-4 years later. Stereo
headsets, stereo Signal One CX7A's, stereo Henry 2K3's, stereo microphones,
footswitches, bandswitches, and log sheets. In all contests the value of
quick bandswitching was much more valuable than the "second radio" practice
that many preach. In 48 hour contests listening on the "second radio"
increased fatigue to such a degree that I required so much more sleep that
the scoring advantage was wiped out. In the Sweepstakes there was a tiny
value to listening on a second radio only during the worst Sunday hours.

The benefit of running two radios is that the resultant efficient
bandchanges make for an aggressive contesting style. With two radios I
would frequently switch to a new band and be off and running in a fraction
of a second. With one radio, I will pound away with the CQ's until the rate
has dropped and the whole contest seems futile before I make a band change,
and, upon arrival on the new band I'll be disoriented seeking my first
contact.

Which is more valuable to a contester -- SO2R or 40/80/160M directive
antennas? Shouldn't we be discussing a separate category for stations with
40/80/160M directive antennas ahead of discussing SO2R issues? Shouldn't we
create separate categories for antenna height categories and number of
elements ahead of SO1R/SO2R categories? Straight key vs. bug vs. keyer?
Should there be a separate categories for operators like K3ZO who only use
wide SSB filters on CW?

Q: How many categories can we stand before the contest is ultimately
cheapened? -- N4ZR
A: Depends on the contest -- and the sponsor of the contest makes the call,
not those of us discussing the issue here.
