In that price category, of which I'm in most of the time also,
IC-765, TS 850 or FT 990 would all be good choices if the rigs
were in good shape, and filters would be a nice touch. A friend
found an Omni 6 opt 3 for $1000 for me about a year ago, but
they usually go for a little more then that.
