Having just finished the IARU contest, I wanted to share some of my
observations.
IARU is an interesting contest as it occurs not far from the longest
day and goes for an intense 24 hours. Additionally US stations get
decent points for working across their respective zones.
Tho NW7US had indicated condtions changing from good to troubled,
things were promising before the contest. We had an all night 20M
opening and 15 was fairly wide.
With trepidation about disturbed condx we started the contest. Not bad
! Fifteen meters opened up well and twenty was also open so that SO2R
could be exploited. Our first hour was 129Q and the rate meter slid to
147/hour from 13:46 to 14:45.
Rates remained good thru the day with 10M opening up enough to work
the big european stations-not bad for this point in the SS !
As evening wore in it was noted there was a lack of Asian stations.
This seemed to indicate condx were down from the previous day-but this
was according to forecast and made for an early trip to the low bands.
The low bands were good- QRN is such a factor this time of year but I
really lucked out as the noise level was quite good.
40M sustained some good runs peaking about 130/hr in the 0400z hour. I
elected to s&p on 80M going for the mults, signals seemed very good.
160 was a tougher slog, just could not raise SN0HQ. But Eu sunrise
produced better condx. Tho GB5HQ ruled the signals from here, TM0HQ
was well over S9 at 0310Z. I realized after working him how short the
window is on 160m at this time of year ! This made the urgency of the
other bands more immediate but 40m did not want to die. Matter of
fact, at sunrise here S580IARU was still pounding thru on 40M ! In
retrospect I think this was partly due to disturbed condx holding Eu
to the lower bands. 20M was growing very quiet tho the ZL path seemed
to remain open thru everything-ZL6A was loud on all five bands tho I
missed them on 160.
Sunrise confirmed that condx had gone way south, signals were way down
and a near complete absence of UA9. (No JA, tho a few worked on 40M).
This was our first IARU using N1MMlogger-what a great program !! There
are some superb programs out there for DOS but N1MM is tops for
Windows, IMHO.
Helps, SO2R support, User interface, ease of install, functional
innovation, and fast support have really impressed this curmudgeon..
