Art I can very easily respond to your first comment without consulting anyone.
I, N7MAL, consider myself to be a slightly above, very slightly, above average.
I have lucked out a few times, at various QTH's, and managed to snag a section
certificate. My station, for the last 12 years is slightly below average, for a
contest station. I have no tower or yagi and no amp. I have wires hanging from
a 60 ft push-up mast and a big vertical.
I've known Fred, K3ZO, for 40 years. I'm sure everyone would agree Fred is a
premier, 'cream-of-the-crop', contester. Fred operated a contest years ago from
one of my stations. I watched him and learned. I can guarantee you if we were
to trade places, during a domestic contest, SS, NAQP, etc, there would be
little change in the outcome. Yes I might get 100 more Q's and Fred might get
100 less Q's but he would still beat me soundly. (Fred knows the 2 basic
secrets of successful contesting and applies them, I look for excuses not to
apply them)
My point to Ken, K6LA, was an average contester is not going to become great
just because he is sitting in a 'big-chair', he is still going to be average
whereas a premier contester is still going to be premier even if he is sitting
in a little chair.

Two of our frequent contributors differ in opinion as to whether the
"average" operator at a super station could beat the super operator with a wire

1. (Serious, to the point) I think the two contributors have different
concepts of who the "average" operator is. Perhaps they could discuss that
(civilly, of course) off-reflector. and then see if they still disagree.
2. (Nostalgia) As I recall, K2EIU/5 did pretty well in some CD parties with
a wire out the window. I believe this tale has been mentioned here previously.
Maybe Ken or W2RU will give us the true story.
3. (Funny nostalgia) I operated with a wire out the window from my
apartment in Madison, WI, in Fall of 1969. Only ground (if any) was the AC
wiring. Running 180 watts from the T-4X, I got a nice glow in the table lamp
across the room.
