I keep hearing stories on rates and racing.  Maybe the gang with big towers
and multi stations fit the bill but if one considers Single Operator
contesting there are two types of contest for the median contester.

1.    Contests where you run the majority of the time but skills at finding
mults is important (sections or countries).  The biggest leap forward here
is the advent of SO2R.

2.    Contests such as the Oceania DX or Holyland where the biggest skill is
finding the most stations in the allotted time.  Very limited running
(mostly calling CQ).

Sprints have added a new dimension to contest type 2.
