The comment from KY1V about a list of do's and don'ts for guest
operators at contest stations prompts me to make another suggestion.
I've often been surprised by the great variability in SSB signal quality
from contest to contest, band to band within the same contest, and even
time to time on the same band from several of the larger contest
stations. One of the midwest contest stations that has ALWAYS had a
really poor signal sounded great this past weekend, and one of the
largest east coast stations that has generally had a fine signal was so
overdriven on 15m Sunday afternoon that they couldn't work a couple of
loud South Americans I tuned across.
I suspect that the issue has to do with various ops trying to reset the
gain and compression to their own voice when they plop down in the
chair, but if I were managing one of those stations I'd try to get that
all out of the way ahead of time and set some boundary conditions for
settings no matter who the op.
For what it may be worth ...
