I ask once for the person's zone if I suspect the zone is incorrect or I
misunderstood, such as the USA station saying zone 6. If he/she still says
6, I ask where they live. If he/she says NY (as an example), I ask if he is
okay with me entering zone 5. If he says yes, then that is what I enter. If
he says no, then I enter 6. After all, weren't we told in a recent thread to
enter what was sent? :-)
I am kibitzing, but had a couple of similar issues.

At the risk of getting too obvious...
If you don't get the right exchange in a contest, shouldn't you just ask for
it?
I remember in SS many times getting back something like 'five nine three'
and having to ask if the op could give me the right exchange.
After a serial number of 40, it's pretty obvious it's not a zone number. Up
to 40, there are probably a few that get you pretty excited...
Often, it's because the op just got on to play for a bit and made a faulty
assumption of the rules. Doesn't mean the QSO is invalid, as long as you get
the right exchange.
