I am using a rock solid 250hz bandwidth filter. That person is "non existent
to me in most cases" when I am 250hz away.

I have a good narrow filter as well; if you're CQing 250Hz from where I'm
CQing, I won't have any trouble copying those who may call me.

Problem is, most of the casual guys calling us *don't* have a 250Hz filter. I may be able to copy any callers just fine, but if those callers don't have a good narrow filter, they can't hear *me*.

This happened to me a couple of times during the WPX. My rate would spontaneously vanish, and after tuning around a bit with the RIT, I'd find someone further east but within my skip zone had lit up CQing within 200Hz. I could still copy those who did call just fine, but it was obvious that far fewer stations could copy me. (European calls would vanish & I'd work only W0/W6/W7 for a few minutes.)
