Actually, Italy has only been part of Italy for about 150 years. It existed
for the first time as a unified, independent country, with anything
resembling its current borders, as a result of various wars fought between
1848 and 1866. Napoleon's brother-in-law ruled southern Italy as King of
Naples for a few years in the early 19th century.
