As many of you are aware, the CW Skimmer and Skimmer Server software from VE3NEA, which is used by every node on the Reverse Beacon Network, relies on a "3-character pattern" file to decide how plausible a callsign that it copies is. This means that when a new callsign pattern begins to be issued (the new German contest calls are a good example), unless the pattern file is updated, stations signing a callsign like that will be spotted less. Why? Because if Skimmer/SkimServ can't find the pattern in the file, it demands more repetitions before accepting it as credible. In a contest setting, that will mean fewer spots.

I have just completed the updating of this file, based on all spots on the RBN from October 1 2013 to about September 15 2014, manually culled for busts. I have been testing the file on my RBN node since earlier this month, and am satisfied that it is stable and comprehensive. Now is the time to try to get it to as many RBN node operators as I can.

The problem is that the list of nodes is dynamic and constantly changing. To get it to as many node ops as I can, I need contesters' help. Please forward this message to as many node ops as you know, andparticularly in Europe and North America, where the population is rapidly changing. Club reflectors would also be a good idea.

The new file is downloadable at <www.reversebeacon.net/downloads/patt3ch/patt3ch.lst>, and needs to be placed in Appdata\Roaming\Afreet\products\SkimSrvor \CwSkimmer, replacing the one that is there.

Thanks, and see you in CQWW CW!
