I am trying to get comfortable with this but not having much success. I'm
an S&P guy through and through and not a competitor by any stretch, but
would really like to learn to run. ARRL DX seemed impossible to find a spot
to settle in and train on running (i.e. high up the band or otherwise "out
of the way"...)

Perhaps a different contest would be a better training ground for running.
The last thing I want to do is annoy people while fumbling with the
keyboard, asking for repeats, etc. I realize the best way to learn is to
do, but it's been a struggle.

Suggestions?
