Greetings...
With all the recent reflector chatter about getting young people involved in
our hobby, I'd like to
remind everyone that Saturday January 7th is ARRL Kids Day. We've been
participating for the past
six years so it's become an annual event here at KH6LC. We'll be a
Multi-Multi and easy to find as
we'll be spotting ourselves on DX Summit. I'm not sure who has more fun,
the kids operating or the
adults "coaching" them. We must be on to something good because everyone
wants to come back
year after year. Please consider inviting some young people in to operate.
You'll need to spend a
little time explaining what's going on. Let them tune around some, listen
to other kids, adjust the
volume, etc. We've also found it helpful if you can somehow share
headphones. They'll need a
little guidance to get started. While kids today catch on pretty fast,
we've found it helpful to have
a simple "help board" at the operating position with your callsign in
phonetics, how to call "CQ Kids Day",
your QTH and other basic exchange information. Their age and the weather is
popular. They don't
seem to care about what type of radio and antenna you're using. The most
important thing is for the
kids to have an enjoyable experience.
