Particularly if we get any more flares...

This may be a once in a lifetime use of amateur radio for such an experiment.  I wish the best to the group who will be analyzing these data - because it will be hard to figure "normal vagaries of the ionosphere" from those caused, if any, by the eclipse.

Amen, Hank - as of last night, over 1000 hams had pre-registered, so I know we're all hoping for a lot of activity, because without activity there's nothing for the RBN, WSPRNET, PSKReporter etc. to log.

For anyone not working during those hours, please partake of the Solar Eclipse QSO Party, 21 Aug 2017 1400 – 2200 UTC

This gives us amateur radio operators a great opportunity to participate in a scientific experiment.  The thesis is "Lack of Solar Radiation during an eclipse will affect the ionosphere enough to be observable during the period of partial and total eclipse of he sun."  The more information provided by amateur radio operators, the better the quality of these data.

Rules are at http://hamsci.org/about-hamsci

Note that the majority of the data will be from the reversed beacon network, though "real" signal reports from individuals will be useful.  This means that the usual "RST 5NN" won't be of much use in the SENTRST and RECDRST blanks, but qualitative and quantitative signal strength data will be useful.

So, pleast get on a send CQ SEQP or CQ TEST or CQ URCALL and provide these data for the RBN.  This will help prove or disprove the thesis of the experiment. Also report your "real RST" results  -- N1MM+, W3KM, and other logging software provides methods for over riding the "refilled RST 599" boxes.    Please report your best estimate of ERP along with a cabrillo file.
