[CQ-Contest] Is Field Day a contest?

If you want to determine whether Field Day is a contest or not, try this as a 
thought experiment: 

The ARRL stops publishing the results online and publishes them only in print 
in the paper QST in call sign alphabetical order?  
 If it's not a contest, lack of ranking won't matter.  If it is a contest, it 
will.  

You will find out in about 39 milliseconds.
