Jim,
The IC-735 is unique among ICOM radios in that it communicates with a
shorter string of frequency data (8 bytes) unlike other models (10 bytes).
This is no doubt the cause of the problems you're having.
Try changing the radio ID to 2C hex (which is an IC-765) and turn the IC-735
support "OFF" (if that's an option) and see how that works.
