Forgive me...but you're planning to place the
honda generator on top of a tower, pole, or mast?
No? And you're worried about lightning?
Most likely, it's sitting on the ground, and you're
not going to do much to protect it, in a portable installation,
if there's a nearby strike.
Most likely, it wouldn't be struck directly, rather there
would be current induced in the power distribution system
which could damage the genset. (The one-turn transformer
scenario, of which the primary is the lightning strike.)
cheapest insurance would be.... insurance.... and don't
stand on top of the genset in a lightning storm.
IMHO, I would not attempt to create a ground, beyond that
provided by the genset frame. I would take care to assure
that the distribution cables were wx proofed and safe, for
safety reasons.
And beyond that... worry about something else.
Good thread, btw... my next genset will be honda, and
knowing about the switching supply is helpful. If the
switcher noise is a problem, I would try ferrites, and also alert
Honda to it. It's a part 15 problem.
