The explosion meant someone fairly close was without power and most likely
caused by a squirrel.  It could have been much further away than you may
imagine. The distance the sound of a fuse blowing can travel is amazing.

Your noise, is probably, at least, two sources. One lower level but more
constant and the second very intermittent or sensitive to the higher temp.
Send me a wave file of the noise when low level and again when at the high
level. If you use win media player (Scope, bars & wave mode) you will be
able to see the characteristics of the multiple sparking sources. The view
is about 360hz.
