I tried wifi...we have dense woods between the house and barn...even in
winter it doesn't cut it. My wife refused to let me cut a hole threw the
trees ;-)

Inasmuch it seems frequency dependent I suggest
you might want to check the resonate points for that CAT5 cable.
As Martin has suggested a WiFi may be a better solution.
