I'm in the city of Portland and fairly near a foundry and zinc plating
plant but S7 crackling seemed to be a bit more than I expected. Plus it
was intermittent, mostly happening when the weather was good. I bought
the MFJ-856 knowing full well that I might have to fix it before I used
it (it worked out of the box) and was surprised to find that the noise
was LOUD and coming from what seemed to be the pole just down the block.
I called Portland General Electric on Saturday but had to call again on
Monday and they were out on Tuesday according to the contractors who
were working on my basement stairs. Said they traced the noise to some
shorting on the pole in front of my house.
So, I have to practice a bit more with the noise finder, but so far so
good. Wish me luck.
