At least some of the DirecTV DVRs allow one to connect an eSATA external drive, but it *replaces* the internal drive rather than adds to the internal one's capacity. And the external drive cannot then even be transferred to another DirecTV box, because the drive is "married to" the original box and will be reformatted if detected by another box.

No problem installing U-Verse at my location..and I can run a high RF

U-Verse, on the other hand, is a crappy service, well documented with
failure upon failure with their AT&T U-Verse access points. Degradation
of video and audio is common place, failure of their DVR's is common and
although not a failure point, AT&T's parochial, paranoid attitude about
piracy is unfounded and ridiculous. (They will not implement the USB
feature on their DVR boxes so we can connect an external hard drive to
store season long shows for viewing at our own time frame.) Cable allows
it, DISH allows it, and I suspect Direct Tv allows it...the formatting
on the external hard drive is proprietary so it cannot be hooked up to a
computer and the content viewed. In fact, if you have to have your DVR
exchanged, the programs on the attached external hard drive will be
lost. In short...piracy of programs would be very difficult.

Needless to say, as soon as my contract expires, I am out of here..as
far as U-Verse is concerned. The 24 MBps of internet access is just not
worth it.

They played with U-Verse in Reno, Nevada, specifically their
TV/internet/fiber service, it absolutely was NOT compatable with Ham
radio
and I saw an on AT&T site when a friend was researching it recently, AT&T
stated that they wouldn't install U-Verse where two-way radio
equipment was.
This was in late September.
