My power company has the whole house protector available.
I purchased it from them and they installed it no charge because the meter
must be removed in order for the protector to be mounted behind the meter.
I also use surge protectors on devices that have microprocessors for the
non-lightening events.
When lightening is within 50 miles I unplug the line cords and disconnect
all antennas.....this leaves all devices isolated.
So far...so good.
My antennas have been direct hit 4 times by lightning and no damage to
anything in the house.
This does not include coax or baluns.....they blew up....literally....but
they are outside.
Don't leave any coax connected to antennas on the floor.
I did and now I have 2 nice holes burned into the carpet.

Eric,
Polyphaser & Transtector are two that I've used on our commercial radio
sites in past years. I understand those two have since been merged under
one company (Infinite Electronics), but still sell under their original
names.
If your local electric utility offer whole house surge guard service, you
could find out what brand they're using.
If they offer the service and you're thinking of getting this through them,
be aware they might not cover lightning surge protection if you have outdoor
antennas connected to the house since they won't cover surge damage coming
in through the antenna cables. They can always claim it came in that way
even if it did not.

I'm interested in having a whole house surge (AC) protector installed.
How does one size it, and can anyone recommended a manufacturer (and
particular model)?
Thanks & 73,
