| Our efficient home made going to a heat pump impractical.  The break 
even pay back compared yo our "old" furnace" was close to 50 years, 
making the high efficiency heat & air conditioner more economical (The 
rebate for the high efficiency with the 2 speed blower was the same as 
with the variable speed in MI .)  They were willing to guarantee the 
variable speed would be RF quiet, "in writing", but I decided to go with 
the two speed

Folks trying to save $$ on heating/cooling costs coupled with possible rebates 
for higher SEER systems encourages installations with variable speed controller 
I suspect.
We stayed with a standard (RF quiet) controller.

Why use variable speed controller at all?  Most systems that use motor controllers have 
2-speed controllers as "standard equipment" and offer variable speed as an 
upgrade.  I suggest that you try to avoid variable speed.
