Bob,
There are a lot of newer operators who think it's neat, smart or perhaps even
time-saving to call you and send an exchange at the same time.
Not only is this inadvisable, it causes QRM and puts the relatively simple
contest exchange procedure out of sync.
Experienced operators (whatever they are), once they call QRZ are expecting
to at that moment see only callsigns appear on the screen. Chances are, in
the jumble of stuff appearing on the screen, you would have to ask for a
repeat of the report anyway, so it's really a dumb idea.
I am so disgusted by it that I have programmed a function key that says:
<cr> PLEASE DO NOT SEND A REPORT UNTIL YOU ARE RECOGNIZED! <cr>
I use it without exception, even if I did happen to read the hotshot station.
To acknowledge his method of operating would be to encourage it.
Of the 20 or so that called me during the WPX test who did this, about 18
came back and called the commonly accepted way and the other two went away.
Exceptions to accepted operating practice in contests just wastes everyone's
time. This is not a case of being stiff and inflexible. It's a case of the
rest of us expecting one thing and getting another when seconds count.
Long answer to a short question. Sorry.
