I'm running the Mark V (not Field) and generally operate at 100 watts when
running in a contest. Even at that level the cooling fan cycles on and off
suggesting that it is not operating too hot. The manual seems to suggest you
can operate full power (200 watts) providing you leave equal cooling time
after transmitting. That would be difficult to do when running but might be
possible during S&P. I'd hesitate to push it that hard though.
Previously I had an FT-990 and ran it at 50 watts all the time during Rtty
contests and sometimes at 100 watts but only for short bursts. I was VE3BUC
back then. It never had a problem either.
When down south /W4 I operate a Yaesu FT-100 mobile (parked) and usually
operate it at 50 watts for Rtty. No problems with that for several years
now.
