Phil could you please explain your use of 3 X 3, 2 X 3, 1 X 2, and 1 X 3
calls? I just applied for a 2 X 1 call and hope that it's not a problem.

I think Phil is referring to

GU0SUP GU0SUP DE W7AY W7AY W7AY

as a 2x3 (i.e. two of the other persons callsign and three of your own).

In a contest, I usually only send a 0x2. I.e., if I am answering someone else's CQ, I send

carriage return
W7AY W7AY
carriage return

the two carriage returns are to place a barrier between line noise and what I send. The reason for sending two of my own calls instead of one is that it is an error checking mechanism. If he sees the same callsign repeated, he pretty well knows that he is printing correctly. If he prints "W7AY W7AT" he can send QRZ? or W7 AGN?

In a CW contests, I send my call only once, no DE. Most of the experienced contesters seem to prefer hearing that. SSB contests? Lets not go there... :-)

Sending his callsign when you call him is not really needed; and anyone who sends a 3x3 should be flogged :-). As Phil stated, he already knows his own callsign. No additional information is passed. Thus DE is not needed either.

I only (finally) send his callsign when I send the exchange. This way, he is assured that it is he that I worked, and not another person on the same frequency who he is not hearing, i.e.,

GU0SUP QSL 599 OR OR 3 W7AY

That said, I sent not a single callsign last weekend. I wasn't anywhere near my radio, HI HI.
