This one is in the "let's get serious" category. I've handled
several thousand of pieces of
message traffic by voice in ONE of our hurricane emergencies in Florida.
I mean voice messages *copied by hand, with re-reads for clarity*.
There are serious safety
of life issues!

Being a first responder and a comm officer with a MASH unit i do not
think hams will be doing much serious safety of life issues.
we have our own sat comm's and repeaters in our comm vans. that are
self serving. we do not use local power land lines or cell towers.
ham are used to pass Health and Welfare messages and very little more.
the need for a faster data mode is really not needed as most of your
messages are or should be short and to the point. Red Cross Sal
Army HHS and DHS all use their own people and hams very little
except for H and W messages. and yes i have passed thousands of
messages in my 55 yrs as a ham. and a lot was hand copies or i used a
mill when i had one. the bottom line is the sail mail boys and
equipment guys are the ones pushing this.. and some ARES hams who
think they will be dispatching first responders to safety of life issues..
but to each his own. we can hash this out for another two weeks but
time will tell and nothing we say or do here will make much difference.
Wishing you a Very Merry Chirstmaa
