When contesting I use foam ear plugs then headphones. This means I can have a much lower audio level in the ears. It also reduces the external noise from the cooling fans on the amplifiers relative to the signal being heard. I find this method means I can operate for longer as fatigue is lower. 73 David G3YYD -----Original Message----- From: RTTY [mailto:rtty-bounces@contesting.com] On Behalf Of Ed Muns Sent: 24 March 2016 20:22 To: 'John Merrill' Cc: 'RTTY Reflector' Subject: Re: [RTTY] Dayton Hamvention RTTY Contest Forum My primary reason for using low tones is that they are less stressful to listen to and much less fatiguing over a long contest period. For the same reason (less fatigue), I reduce the headphone level because all my ears need to know is the presence or absence of a signal. This also makes it more practical to disable AGC in RTTY mode because there is less danger in loud signals hurting one's ears.
