I agree with this analysis.  I have used the PAIR of 250 Hz
filters and the loss is noticeable as you state.   So very weak 
signals are even "weaker", but the sig to noise ratio goes way
up, and I can still pull them out.  However, I find that using an
outboard preselector is very, very useful for the weak signals
using both narrow filters.  I have the palomar p210x and it really
pulls up the very weak ones using the narrowest filtering.  Seems
to me that an inboard preamp would be nice for this very reason,
but the outboard does the job.
