Many thanks to all of you for your replies. The consensus seems to be
that the Omni VI does in fact have numerous birdies, but they are
normally masked by atmospheric noise when an antenna is connected.
Unfortunately, I can hear the same birdies with or without an antenna,
or with the Omni VI terminated to a dummy load. I first noticed the
noise the first day of operation, but assumed the tones I was hearing
were from another source.

I presently own ten other Ten-Tec HF rigs and when subjected to the same
non-scientific listening test, all seem much quieter than the Omni.
I've owned Ten-Tec gear for the last twenty years and never been
disappointed until now. Perhaps the service department can resolve the
problem.
