Michael,
My best suspect is a cracked solder joint, or some hot component in the audio
stage whose continuity is opening up. Resistor, or transistor, IC, or even a
coupling capacitor or electrolytic coupling to speaker. Because the S meter
still works, it is after the IF stages and AGC stage. Definitely more on the
audio side.

Use a high impedance probe to scope, ACVM, or even a resistor of some several
K ohms in series with old fashioned 2 K ohm headphones to signal trace the
audio signal after the detector stage, and watch for it to cut out going from
input of a stage to output. Check the volume control for intermittent also.

Good Luck and let us know the cause,
Stuart K5KVH
