Several people have contacted me independently for the answers that I
received. I thought these had come across the reflector, but apparently not,
so perhaps I should post them here for others who may be interested.

Here's what I got:
I don't know about the Omni V noise blanker, but most blankers work on
impulse noise only, not QRN. For that, you need a DSP unit or a noise
eliminator on the RX antenna input. (Even those only work on "near" noise,
not band static or QRN.) My Omni VI+ noise blanker is of average
effectiveness - i.e., works OK on some impulse noises, but not on others.
Of course, it does nothing for QRN.
Hope this helps.

The noise blanker is for impulse noise, like ignition noise, line noise and
maybe over the horizon radars, not for ordinary thunderstorm static or radio
noise. For the impulse noises such as power line noise, the noise blanker in
my Corsair II works very will though it chops holes in adjacent strong
signals which brings back the noise. One of the fundamental failures of the
noise blanker concept. To be fast it has to be wideband and before the
selective filters that lengthen the pulse a great deal.

Hi Tom-I too have a 'new' omni V-please summarise or forward the
answers you received. It seems to work on impulse noise such as a car going
by, but little else.

I too am using a random wire-about 60'-I recently improved by ground by
running a counterpoise-seperate wires cut for 40, 20 & 15 meters- seems to
work pretty well on all bnds and is much easier to tune with my little mfj
tuner. You'll love the omni-I'm having a ball with mine!
