Sure, balance means the source resistors match too.

The low pass filter and often the antenna tuner have no conductive shunt
elements so are no lightning protection. A shorted quarter wave stub can
be a help but only for one band. The gas tube type of lightning
protectors help a great deal, though they aren't cheap. But they won't
protect from an adjacent transmitter. Fast diodes across the antenna
terminals can help, but can also lead to intermod problems which we
purchased Tentec radios to avoid.

I think a relatively low value (say 1K) wire wound resistor across the
input of the receiver can do more to protect the receiver than a lot of
devices. With the inductance of the winding it will have virtually no
effect on received signals, but should shunt static charges to ground.
Nothing protects from a direct lightning strike except having the
antenna system ground and coax separated from the radio by feet of air
gap.
