WD-40 is a great penetrant and general purpose lubricant. It does have =
a minor undesirable side effect - it leaves a coating of petroleum =
distillate that can be a problem in dusty areas... Dust combined in =
the residue=20
can act like an abrasive - and damage resistance tracks -but then so can =
dust all on it's own... The damage potential of WD-40 is often =
overstated... and doesn't matter much on non precision parts.
On high precision parts - you will void their warranty using WD-40... I =
know Peavey gets a lot of mixers back with noisy slide controls - and =
more often than not - WD-40 is present (and according to Max - one of =
their top mixer guru's occasionally they even get "scented =
Vaseline"!!!). The biggest problem with the newer controls is that the =
heat-laminated carbon traces turn loose if saturated by any penetrant =
-which as noted above - WD-40 is a good one. This is where WD-40's =
"reputation" gets trashed. Once "soaked" by WD-40 - some of=20
these traces get litterally "wiped" off the substrate by the wiper... =
Older controls - of course- weren't "heat laminate" traces - and don't =
have that problem. BTW - Peavey uses Deoxit DN5 for most "routine" =
cleanings/ lubes of controls - nastier ones get Electrowash 2000 =
followed by atreatment of R5 (the industrial strength 2oz. bottled =
treatment from Caig)... And for the really old slide pots - to get that =
"smooth glide"feeling back - a _very_ light coat of white lithium grease =
on the movingparts. But I've got to stress again - we're talking=20
_modern_ pots here... not the old "brute force" stuff of yesteryear...
(Peavey's national service center is just up the street from me - and =
they service an estimated 5 - 6 thousand mixers etc. a year - with an =
average of 50 controls on an average mixer (their larger boards have =
many more - the SRC-6032 has over 540 pots in it) that's over a quarter =
million pots a year! - I think they know a bit about pots!!!!)...just =
.02 worth of observation...
