I did an RF gain mod to my Scout. It is similar to a mod that was
developed for the Argosy. I rewired the mike gaim pot and put a
new mike gain pot on the rear panel in place of the swr/power meter
switch. I jumpered the switch connector on the board to always
read reflected power. Its no problem putting the mike gain on the
back: I found that unless the mike is changed, its pretty much a set
and forget control. It could even be mounted inside if one doesn't
want to part with the swr meter switch. Also, I didn't have to drill
holes or use an outboard box.

RF gain control really makes the Scout sound good, especially on 80m
at night where there is a lot of QRN. I'll post my version when I get
'round to documenting it properly, bu the basic circuit may be found
in ARRL's QRP Classics book, Feb 1986 QST, pg 51, or Ten Tec service
bulletin TN2-525, except the mike gain pot is 10 k, so the fixed
resistors will have to be adjusted for the right range and the
operation of the control is compressed into the lower third of the
rotational range. It works great, anyway.
