I'll put an end to the suspense at:

http://www.qsl.net/w9ac/

The gorgeous Hallicrafters receiver that first caught the attention of
Steve, N4LQ, is in fact a ca. 1955 model SX-100 MKII to be exact. Aside
from the dial backlash and slight microphonics, it's still a very capable
receiver. Question: does the backlash worsen with age? I never remember it
being this bad as a novice back in the early '70s.

Also not immediately seen in the picture is the new ACOM 2000A amplifier.
The remote control unit sits in front of the Alpha vapor amp and the amp
sits quietly on the floor. The ACOM is an absolutely incredible amp, whose
mechanical and electrical performance is as good as my Alphas. Those of you
with good contrast monitors can see the amp on the floor in back of the
filing cabinet, next to my green 100% home-brewed 30-watt 6DQ6 novice
transmitter, ca. 1970, and built from a late '50s ARRL handbook design. It
still works perfectly today.

Dale, the call sign W9EAC once belonged to my OM, now SK. In going through
his old QSL cards from the 1940s, I researched the calls and names of those
who were still licensed. Most are SK today. However, out of all my
requests, I was surprised to see that ten guys still had saved their cards
over course of nearly 50 years and were honored to send me my OM's original
card to me. So, there they are sitting up high on the console.

To tie all this in to the Ten-Tec reflector, the Triton IV and 515 Argonaut
are hidden behind the plants. The console became too "busy" (like it isn't
now?) and I bring them out as I use them. The Triton IV is still one of the
best values on the market, in my opinion.

The picture was taken with a new Sony Mavica FD-91 digital camera, no
flash...only track lighting on dim. The camera saves pictures to floppy
disks. It's an awesome idea and as you can see, it works well.

See everyone at Hamvention '99!

73,

-Paul, W9AC
