Well, sure, if you want to run old PCs and old O/S, but what if you want to be
able to use all the new goodies in Windows (9.x or NT)  If I have the rig near
the antenna then I don't think anything short of fiberoptic link would work!

This is easy.  Just go to the Black Box catalog and
get an RS-232 to RS-422 converter and you can run up
to 1000 feet with RS-422 and use shielded cable.  Its
easy and most homes don't have a run of 1000 feet.  Or
hook it up to a 486 running Windows 3.1 (you know the
windows that actually worked good) and network your
other PC to the remote and operate it that way.
Plenty of ways to do it.
